South Georgia

South Georgia

South Georgia is one of the most remote and rugged islands on earth and is situated in the southern Atlantic Ocean in the vicinity of the southern tip South America and the Antarctic Peninsula.

More famously perhaps, it has been called “the most staggering wildlife show on earth”. Our trip is timed to coincide with arrival of spring, and thus a feast of wildlife activity that will leave no doubt in our minds that the afore-mentioned title is well deserved! High mountain peaks and multi-hued glaciers make for spectacular backdrops as we seek out the immense colonies of King Penguin that simply have to be seen to be believed! As if 500,000 King Penguins isn’t enough, enormous Southern Elephant Seal bulls battle each other for the right to the harems of females, and long-winged albatrosses engage in beautiful courtship displays that are both entertaining, and a delight to photograph. Interwoven into this once-in-a-lifetime photographic journey is South Georgia’s rich history, including the story of legendary Antarctic explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton, who lies buried on the island. An entire week of this expedition is dedicated to explore South Georgia (which is more than double the amount of time that a standard voyage to Antarctica would spend here), hence we are assured of optimal time to photograph and enjoy the riches of this remarkable island.
